Metro Stage Company
ASSASSINS
April 1 - 9, 2005
Directed by JANET NEELY
Music Direction by MICHAEL KREUTZ
Book by JOHN WEIDMAN
Music & Lyrics by STEPHEN SONDHEIM
Bold, original, surreal, disturbing, thought-
provoking and alarmingly funny, “Assassins” is
perhaps the most controversial musical ever
John Wilkes Booth to Lee Harvey Oswald, Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman
bend the rules of time and space, taking us on a nightmarish rollercoaster ride in
which assassins and would-be assassins from different historical periods meet,
interact and in an intense final scene inspire each other to harrowing acts in the
name of the American Dream.

An intimate acting piece for an ensemble cast, “Assassins” contains some of the
finest scene writing in recent memory as well as a brilliant, melodic score which
pastiches American music throughout the ages, from folk to ragtime to 1970s soft
rock.

“This new Metro Stage Company has only one more week-end in the Family YMCA
Theatre in Central Square Cambridge to show their carefully crafted production. The
cast is superb, singing complicated music but (my supreme compliment) acting while
they do it. The shoestring-sets have John MacKenzie's brooding, eloquent lighting,
and Julie Silverman's choreography is pointedly minimal….the run of this production
is far, far too short.”

“…quite impressive.”

“The brand new Metro Stage Company explodes on the scene this weekend with
guns ablazin’….Director Janet Neely and music director Michael Kruetz are
magicians: What they’ve done (along with Julie Silverman’s clever choreography,
John MacKenzie’s shadowed lighting and Case’s minimal set) is nothing short of
wonderful. From Erin Tchoukaleff’s wacky Squeaky Fromme to Chris Moleske’s eerie
would-be assassin, the show sizzles."

[The actors] bring experience and authority to their roles, in this solid production
thoughtfully staged by director Janet Neely.”
